About

Was That A Quake? is a free, independent live earthquake monitoring service.

What this site does

Was That A Quake? aggregates real-time earthquake and tsunami data from the world's official seismic agencies and displays it on interactive maps for the general public. If you ever felt a rumble and wondered — well, was that a quake? — you can check here within seconds and find out.

Where the data comes from

Every region on this site is powered by the relevant national or regional seismic authority. Earthquake data is fetched continuously and refreshed on the page every 90 seconds. Tsunami warnings come from the dedicated Tsunami Warning Centres for each ocean basin. We don't alter the underlying data — we just present it more accessibly.

For the full list of feeds and the agencies behind them, see the Data Sources page.

What this site is NOT

This is not an official emergency-warning service. Was That A Quake? is an independent presentation layer on top of public data. For life-safety decisions, always follow the directions of your local emergency authority.

See the Terms of Use for the full disclaimer.

Why this exists

Government earthquake sites are accurate but often visually confusing and slow. Was That A Quake? presents the same data in a fast, focused, mobile-friendly way, with regional pages tuned for the audiences that care most about each region.
